Unless you plan on doing something about 'fighting with a main-gauche' or 2 swords, I think it is a waste of valuable screen real estate to have your  shield displayed.  It is less interesting than your helmet, which isn't constantly visible -- because practically everybody equips a two-handed weapon anyway, and thus it is empty.  I'd suggest replacing it with your favourite spell, and having an option (weapon on the right, spell on the left or vice-versa).  Magic-focused charactrers want their best offensive spell nearest their index finger, while those specialising in sharp pointy thing want a weapon, and where your index finger is depends on whether you are left or right handed.

You can dual wield single handed weapons. You must drag the secondary weapon to the shield slot. It won't auto-equip there. Try it out. I should probably add in wands at some point that have limited charges. Then you can put them off hand or dual wield them. :)
