If you wield a bow, and stand 2 tiles away from a tile that contains 2 monsters, and begin shooting, you become targetted on one monster, which is what the name shows on the top of the screen.  All well and good, but next assume that the second monster, the one you are not targetting, steps one tile forward and begins attacking you.  You can keep shooting your bow, but you do not automatically acquire the new target of the closer monster,  unless you run around for a bit.  I am not sure exactly what you need to do to lose the old target -- backing up in a straight line for a short distance does not work, for instance.  I will play around and see if I can better qualify 'run around for a bit'.

Possibly related -- you can use your bow to shoot rats that are standing on the other side of the storekeeper, seemingly right through him, and he doesn't feel a thing.

The target system tries to keep its target after it has been acquired. There is an auto target when the player currently does not have a target, but it will only switch with melee weapons if you are not facing your target. This should likely be revised further.

Perhaps there should be a hard target and a soft target. Auto targeting will soft target which will switch based on closest target the player is facing. A hard target would maintain the target as it does now and is initiated by manually targeting a creature.

Of course, I could also just display a button that allows the player to stop targeting.

Well, for people like me who would like a little more challenge in 'how to fight' -- currently all one does is tap on your weapon or your favourite offensive spell and hope -- I have a set of ideas on how combat could be improved. But one problem is that if you lauch a spell or an arrow it only fires if there is a target to acquire. This means that I just go around blasting fire arrows everywhere -- if there is nothing there, no harm done, if there is a hostile there, then harm done, good :-) and there are no neutral parties to kill, rooms to set ablaze, treasures to destroy or mana or bullets (er spell components) to waste by running around in 'continuous fire' mode. I also think that targetting should not display the names of monsters that are behind doors, or attempt to target them. And closing the door between you and the monster, whether you do it or the monster does should break the target. Right now you can shoot at 2 monsters in a tile, hit one, have the other step on step forward, and have the first, damaged one close the door (which seems to happen at random -- smarter monsters should either close the door between themselves and attackers using ranged weapons, or rush them). Now you are stuck, expecially if you are trapped there. You cannot target the monster that is attacking you, -- all you get is the 'door is closed' message -- and I couldn't, at any rate, get the door to open because there was a monster in the way.
