Is this because some rotter stole something from me (and I can have it back when I kill it) or is this because some of the potions in my backpack just smashed.?

Yeah, something of yours got stolen. Unfortunately, you cannot get it back. The creatures do have an inventory, but I do not drop items in that inventory when they die. This is a fairly easy thing to add, so I'll go ahead and add it for the expansion.
