Bought the game yesterday!  It's great work, Jacob.  Well worth waiting for!

I'll save my over-all thoughts for after I've played the game some more, but for now I have two requests:

Currently there is no tangiable, immediate visual feedback when navigating the main menu / load game pages, and when trying to do things in-game etc.  Of course, pressing "new game" / "load game" etc will do those things, and the pages change, but more particularly when working with the inventory it would be nice for items and text to briefly flash yellow (or something appropriate), when registering a touch.  Would make the GUI feel more responsive.

Secondly, I know the Wildfire isn't the fastest Android phone out there, and DD is certainly playable on it, but it's a touch jerky in-game.  Looking around feels very lagged: it would be nice to sacrifice some visual clarity (of which there isn't much on these smaller phones, anyway!) for any possible speed boost.  Feasible?

Otherwise, Jacob, this is solid and rewarding first-person dungeon crawling.  I'm glad it's not really turn based, heck I'm just very pleased to see DD released at all.  Games of this particular style are FRUSTRATINGLY RARE.

I will likely be requesting improved menu art from the artist. What is currently there is minimal. I reused some of the game art I already had to create the menus. The artist will likely be able to improve it by 10x. I will also do some feedback for the controls. Highlighting buttons that are active or pressed and such.

There may be some speed improvements that I can get from pre-allocating strings and such, but I wouldn't expect the improvements to be that great. At most, maybe a 20-50% speed increase. I have a slower phone to test with, so I'll try to get it running a bit smoother.

The lagging is a bit of a trade-off. On faster phones, I need to update movement input more frequently to make everything appear smooth. On slower phones, input updates from moving your finger around the screen actually bogs down the phone. Android takes the approach that it updates movement as fast as it possibly can. I have to throttle it on slower phones, but if I throttle it too much, then it looks slow on faster phones. I'll look at tweaking these values so it looks the best on both.

You already have the resolution for the drawing routines.  Isn't the the CPU speed also available?

With both, you should be able to come up with an algorithm that you can use for your throttle (e.g. Give more throttle to the input more on the smaller/slower phones.)

Just a thought

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Jacob. I can already see that good things are on the way for DD updates.

With regards to the speed, I feel that a game like this doesn't need to be "fast". I'm currently also playing through for the first time King's Field IV on PS2 which is possibly one of the greatest console dungeon crawler games ever produced. And it's very, very slow-moving. Slow pace, combat, progression. But fluid, consistent, responsive.

My point is, I don't feel that Deadly Dungeons has to be faster than it currently is, but the 20-50% speed increase that you mention will - I hope - help to make the game more responsive:

The GUI takes a brief time to show up, tugging on the shop lists to scroll them feels rather haphazard, changing the viewing angle takes just a short time before it actually happens. These are small things, but on a lot of slower Android devices, I feel that if this slight lag/delay in these interface elements can be mitigated to some extent then the game will feel more... fluid and responsive. :)

But enough of that, Deadly Dungeons is damned good dungeon crawling already, and I'm very happy with it as it is!

Good point. Perhaps I can scale this with the processor speed. At the very least, I could adjust the input sleep based on how many frames per second are being displayed.
