I'm thinking about adding some creature spell resistance.

Spell resistance for creatures will work a little differently.  Instead of just having a certain armor value which reduces the damage by that amount, I'm going to make it a percentage-based resistance.

I won't make anything 100% resistant to a certain attack.  Diablo 2 did this, and I always thought it was a bit lame.  I also won't make the resistance reduce by the actual percentage.

The way it will work is as follows:

Let's say a creature has 60% resistance to fire.  What this will mean is that you are guaranteed to do at least 40% of the actual damage with a fire-based attack.  The other 60% would be random.  It could be 0%, or it could be the full 60%.  On average it would obviously be 30% damage.  So, to a creature that has 60% resistance to fire, you will on average do 70% of normal damage.

Example 1

Creature Ice Resistance: 70%

Ice Damage: 100

Guaranteed Damage: 30

Resisted Damage: 0-70

Damage Range of Ice Attack vs Creature: 30-100

Example 2

Creature Lightning Resistance: 100%

Lightning Damage: 80

Guaranteed Damage: 0

Resisted Damage: 0-80

Damage Range of Lightning Attack vs Creature: 0-80

I believe these resistances will make it more valuable to have more than one attack spell.  Also, it will reduce the overpowered attacks of spell casters.

I think it is a sound idea in theory.  I would wonder if it wouldn't be better to make the staff skill lower resistance then, as archers lower armor with piercing.  It would make the staff skill worth it.

After reading the archer thread and the mage thread, it really seems like the issue is that melee is REALLY bad.  Maybe we should bring up melee a little first and then work on balancing them.

Ah, well, melee will get a bonus from the new artifacts. I plan on adding magic damage to weapons. that way, they do bonus fire, ice, or lightning damage. Creature resistances will effect these bonuses just like with spells.
